Athletics: Thousands of runners descend on the boardwalk for 2019 Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half-Marathon

Harrison Ross Toney (Richmond, Va.) takes top spot in the half marathon while Megan Cunningham (Norfolk, Va.) finishes first in women’s race

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Sept. 1, 2019) - More than 7,500 registered runners from age 12 to 81 took to the streets this weekend to participate in the 19th running of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon. Participants from 49 states and 12 countries, regions and territories received a first-class tour of Virginia Beach that started on 14th and Pacific Streets (adjacent to Atlantic Fun Park), headed north on Pacific toward 31st Street (King Neptune statue) where runners turned south toward the Croatan Bridge and General Booth Blvd. before finishing on the Virginia Beach boardwalk.

In the half marathon, Harrison Ross Toney (Richmond, Va.) won the race with his first-place effort clocking a time of 1:09:44. Matt Blivin (Durham, N.C.) was second with a time of 1:11:14. Roger Hopper (Norfolk, Va.) followed in third place finishing in 1:13:21. Megan Cunningham (Norfolk, Va.) was the women’s champion with a final time of 1:16:42 with Marie-Ange Brumelot (Bronx, N.Y.) next behind her at 1:18:25. Viktoria Robitaille (Amityville, N.Y.) rounded out the podium in 1:20:34.

Elite runners and fast times aside, Sunday’s race was all about the party atmosphere. Several local bands, including Court Street Company, The Reef, Troy Breslow, Snickelfritz Scheme, and the Joe Gosman Band performed live on band stages along the route interspersed with cheerleaders and themed water stations.

The musically themed road race celebrated the day’s accomplishments with the sounds of The Deloreans, Virginia Beach’s popular local 80s showband to rock the finish line festival following the half marathon on Sunday. In addition, the runners were treated to exclusive access to three days of music at the Chartway Federal Credit Union American Music Festival that coincided with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon weekend making for an unforgettable weekend of music, fun and running.
