Mr. Geoff Meyer, Managing Director of Asia for The IRONMAN Group, commented: "The 2020 Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon Grand Finale is a race like no other. It is a celebration of Singapore’s solidarity and resilience at the end of a very challenging year. We thank our title sponsor, Standard Chartered Bank, for making the Grand Finale so much more meaningful and special with the Charity Challenge. We look forward to having runners around the world participate in the race virtually and safely, and contribute to the charity effort as we end the year on an encouraging note."
This year, Standard Chartered Bank, the title sponsor of SCSM, has collaborated with The IRONMAN Group, event organiser of SCSM, and announced the SCSM 2020 Charity Challenge. They are inviting runners of the SCSM Grand Finale to clock more mileage so that the SCSM running family can raise up to $1m for youth causes in Singapore. Each runner will raise $15 for every kilometre recorded as part of the SCSM Grand Finale, and a total distance of over 60,000km has been achieved as of 3 December.
Standard Chartered Bank has set aside $1 million to ensure that youths in Singapore can be future-ready, even amidst current pandemic times. The Bank supports youths in education, entrepreneurship and employability, as part of its global community strategy, Futuremakers.
Mr. Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for Social and Family Development, said: "It is heartening to see how the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon unites our community to support fellow Singaporeans in these challenging times. This initiative embodies the spirit of private-public-community partnership and enables everyone to contribute toward a better future for our service users. I hope all of us can support this initiative to empower our youth, support their dreams and aspirations so that they can realise their full potential and one day also give back to the community."
Funds raised will be channeled through Community Chest in multi-year programmes in partnership with the members in its NCSS network.
Mr. Phillip Tan, Chairman of Community Chest, said: "As we call for Singapore to stand in solidarity, we are very heartened that Standard Chartered Bank has stepped up to contribute, not just in monetary support but through community engagement and volunteerism as well. A big Thank You to our runners at the SCSM Grand Finale. It is through such community spirit and collective efforts that we are able to bring hope and courage to those in need and emerge stronger as one nation."
Elaborating why youths are the main focus of the Bank’s Futuremakers global programme, Mr. Patrick Lee, CEO of Standard Chartered Bank (Singapore) Limited, said: "At Standard Chartered, we believe in banking on our youths so that they can learn, earn and grow. Their ability to maximise their potential is critical in creating a sustainable future for us all. COVID-19 has made an adverse and profound impact on our businesses and communities. This is a time for us to stand in solidarity and this is why we are turning to SCSM to engage our runners. I hope to see you virtually at the SCSM Grand Finale. Together, let’s run for a reason!"
