Athletics: Roots Running Project comes north for the Tartan Ottawa International Marathon

OTTAWA, ON, May 9, 2023 - On Sunday, May 28, a group of American elite runners will be making their Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend debuts. Coached by Richey Hansen, Roots Running Project, based out of Boulder, Colorado will have five athletes toeing the start line at the Tartan Ottawa International Marathon.

Parker Stinson is the most well-known of the group. Stinson, 31, has a personal best of 2:10:53 (Chicago Marathon2019), a result which landed him on the podium of a major marathon. As a junior, Stinson also competed at the World Junior Championships in Moncton, where he finished 6th in the 10,000m. Recently, Stinson finished 4th at the prestigious Houston Marathon in January. Stinson is known for his aggressive racing style which has earned him fans from across the running world.

When asked, Stinson explained why he is excited about debuting in Ottawa, “The goal of the race for me is to continue to build momentum off of my great race at the Houston Marathon as I head towards the US Olympic Marathon Trials in February 2024. I would love to run a fast time if possible but more than anything I want to continue to find a way to beat as many people as possible.” He added, “Ottawa is a marathon that is well respected throughout the running world. This race offers a chance to run fast and at the same time compete against a high class field. I want to get accustomed to competing at this high level each time I toe the line.”

Sydney Gidabuday, 26, will be making his marathon debut at Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. The 1:01 half marathoner will look to turn his impressive personal bests over the short distances to 42.2K. While in college at Adams State University, Gidabuday was a 7x NCAA Champion.

Gidabuday is excited to make his debut in Ottawa, “I am excited to start my marathon career at one of the biggest races in the world. Being able to debut alongside experienced teammates gives me comfort. I know I’ll be held accountable the whole way.”

Aidan Reed, 25, will also be making his marathon debut at the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. Last summer, Reed set his personal best in the half marathon of 1:03:27 in Minnesota. Reed went to college at Southern Utah University, the same institution as Canadian marathon record holder, Cam Levins.

Reed is looking forward to his first marathon, “It’s an opportunity to test myself at the marathon distance and see how well I can handle the race. It’s also an incredible opportunity to race alongside some of my teammates and see how our training pays off.”

31-year-old Ryan Root will be shooting to break the 2:15 barrier in the Tartan Ottawa International Marathon. Root, who was a 4x DIII NCAA Champion, has a personal best of 2:15:22, which he ran at the Marathon Project in 2020. He also has a half marathon personal best of 1:04:52. On top of his running duties, Root also serves as a coach for Roots Running Project’s development team.

On the women’s side, Phoebe Oehmig, 26, will be representing Roots Running. Coached by Ryan Root, Oehmig will be shooting to lower her personal best under 2:40 at this year’s race. Oehmig recently set her personal best at the California International Marathon, running 2:45.

Organizers are looking forward to having the athletes and coaches of the Roots Running Project join us in Ottawa.
