10 Years Ago- Marilson Gomes dosSantos (BRA) won the 81st edition of the São Silvestre Road Race (BRA) 15K
decisively over Robert Cheruiyot Kipkoech (KEN), 44:21 to 45:17. Patrick Ivuti Mukutu (KEN)
was 3rd at 45:30. Olivera Jevtic (SER) won the women's race, nine seconds ahead of Rose
Cheruiyot Kosgei (KEN), 51:38 to 51:47. Bizunesh Bekele Sertsu (ETH) was 3rd at 52:02.
20 Years Ago- Kenyans swept the podium (1-2-3) at the 71st edition of the São Silvestre Road Race (BRA) 15K.
Paul Tergat (KEN) won in 43:12 with Simon Chemoiywo (KEN) more than a minute back at 44:16
and Moses Tanui (KEN) 3rd at 44:20. Carmen deOliveira Furtado (BRA) won the women's race with
a 50:53. Rose Cheruiyot Kosgei (KEN) was 2nd at 51:33, a position she would duplicate here
ten years later. Maria del Carmen Diaz (MEX) was 3rd at 52:20.
30 Years Ago- David Edge (CAN) won the 63rd edition of the Harold Webster Memorial Boxing Day (ON/CAN) 10M
over Doug Cronkite (CAN), 50:01.4 to 50:12.5. Steve Boyd (CAN) was 3rd at 50:26.8. Doone
Riley (CAN) was the first woman at 1:02:00.
40 Years Ago- Victor-Manuel Mora Garcia (COL) won the 51st edition of the Round the Houses (BRA) 8.4K over
William Scott (AUS), 23:13.2 to 23:31. Francesco Fava (ITA) was 3rd at 23:53, Garry Bjorklund
(USA) was 4th at 23:58, and Karel Lismont (BEL) was 5th at 24:02. Christa Vahlensieck (GER) won
the women's race by more than a minute over Jacqueline Hansen (CA/USA), 28:40 to 29:52. Eva
Gustafsson (SWE) was well back in 3rd at 31:03. This was the first year that women competed
officially in this race.
50 Years Ago- Gaston Roelants (BEL)won the 41st edition of the Round the Houses (BRA) 7.3K in 21:20.1. Michael
Wiggs (ENG) was next at 21:45.8 and Antonio Ambu (ITA) was 3rd at 21:52.
60 Years Ago- Gordon Dickson (CAN) won the 35th edition of the Hamilton YMCA New Years Day (ON/CAN) 10M with
a 53:35. This race moved to Boxing Day (December 26th, in 1972) and is now known as the Harold
Webster Memorial Boxing Day race.
