COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Two USA Triathlon series -- the Splash & Dash Youth Aquathlon Series and the Retro Tri Series -- will again feature beginner-focused events in cities across the United States with the aim of increasing participation in multisport.
The Splash & Dash Youth Aquathlon Series was first launched in 2012 with 30 events, expanding to 52 in 2016. More than 2,000 athletes ages 7-15 are expected to participate, with events taking place in nine of USA Triathlon's 10 Regions. The 2016 series kicks off at the beginning of March and runs through October. USA Triathlon partnered with race directors, community centers, coaches, clubs and parks and recreation departments to solidify the slate of more than 50 events for the year. The USA Triathlon staff will also host one of the events in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Aug. 27.
Participants ages 7-10 will cover a 100-meter swim and a 1-kilometer run, while athletes ages 11-15 will complete a 200m swim and a 2k run. Visit usatriathlon.org/splashanddash for complete information on the Splash & Dash Youth Aquathlon Series.
The Retro Tri Series showcases the spirit of triathlon with a nod to the sport's origins in the 1970s. Five events comprise the series in 2016 and will introduce new participants to triathlon, with a focus on camaraderie and enjoying multisport rather than competition. Some of the events are not timed. Participants in the Retro Tri Series are encouraged to wear retro-themed attire.
Geared toward adult and youth competitors ages 13 and older, each race includes a 300- to 400-yard swim, 5- to 10-mile bike and 2- to 5-kilometer run. Registration for the events is open to first-timers, seasoned veterans and anyone looking to stay active through swimming, biking and running. Visit usatriathlon.org/retro for complete information on the series.
