10 Years Ago- Ryan Hall won the USA Cross Championships (NY/USA) 12K over Jorge Torres by 27 seconds. Maxwell
King was 3rd, another 15 seconds back while Dathan Ritzenhein was another 7 seconds back in 4th.
The women's 4K was won by Carrie Tollefson who had a five second advantage on runner-up Lauren
Fleshman. Blake Russell was two more seconds behind in 3rd. Other notables include Kara Goucher
in 7th and Shannon Rowbury in 11th. The races served to select the USA team for the world cross
championships.
20 Years Ago- Jonathan Brown (WAL) won the Gasparilla Distance Classic Run (FL/USA) 15K by seven seconds over
Armando Quintanilla (MEX), 42:42 to 42:49. Phillimon Hanneck (ZIM) was 3rd at 42:57. Tegla
Loroupe (KEN) had a 40 second margin on Liz McColgan (SCO) to easily win the women's race.
Joyce Chepchumba (KEN) was 3rd at 49:23. Winning times at this year's race were 46:38 and 54:17.
30 Years Ago- Ines Bibernell (GER) took the gold medal at the European Indoor Championships (ESP) 3000m with
a 8:54.52. Yvonne Murray (SCO) was the silver medalist at 9:01.31 while the bronze medal went
to Regina Cistiakova (LTU) at 9:01.72. The men's race was very tight with only 0.07 seconds
separating the medalists. Dietmar Millonig (AUT) took the gold medal at 7:59.08 with Stefano
Mei (ITA) and Joao-Andrade Campos (POR) rounding out the medalists with 7:59.12 and 7:59.15
respectively.
40 Years Ago- Ingo Sensburg (GER) won the gold medal at the European Indoor Championships (GER) 3000m,
edging silver and bronze medalists Jozef Ziubrak (POL) and Raymond Smedley (ENG). Sensburg
clocked a 8:01.6 while Ziubrak and Smedley ran 8:02.0 and 8:02.2 respectively.
50 Years Ago- Harald Norporth (GER) won the New York AC (NY/USA) indoor two mile over Viktor Kudinskiy (RUS),
8:47.0 to 8:47.4. Thomas Laris (NY/USA) was 3rd at 8:49.6 and George Young (AZ/USA) was
4th, time not known to ADR.
60 Years Ago- Horace Ashenfelter (NY/USA) won the AAU Indoor Championships (NY/USA) 3M with a 14:09.6.
