10 Years Ago- Lornah Kiplagat (NED) ran away from the field at the World's Best (PUR) 10K, more than a minute
ahead of runner-up Susan Chepkemei (KEN), 30:49.4 to 32:07.9. Zhor El Kamch (MAR) came in 3rd
at 32:19.0. In the men's race, Kenyans took the top ten spots, led by Wilson Kebenei (KEN) at
27:43.9. Gilbert Okari (KEN) followed at 28:03.8 and Samuel Wanjiru (KEN) was 3rd at 28:08.2.
20 Years Ago- Moses Kiptanui (KEN) won the NEC Classic (AUS) 5000m, some five seconds ahead of runner-up
Stephen Moneghetti (AUS), 13:20.30 to 13:25.77. Paul Bitok (KEN) was 3rd at 13:26.02 and
mountain runner Jonathan Wyatt (NZL) was 4th at 13:30.32. Angela Chalmers (CAN) won the
women's race with a 15:09.35. Nyla Carroll (NZL) and Kate Richardson (AUS) followed with
15:12.42 and 15:20.59 respectively.
30 Years Ago- Doug Padilla (UT/USA) won the USA 3 mile indoor title at the TAC Mobil Indoor (NY/USA),
edging Bill Krohn (NY/USA), 13:05.88 to 13:06.68. John Gregorek (MA/USA) rounded out
the medalists with a 13:09.08. Lynn Jennings (NH/USA) won the 2 mile indoor title by a
slim margin of 0.14 seconds over Cindy Bremser (WI/USA), 9:28.15 to 9:28.29. Both women
were under the previous world record of 9:31.7 set three years earlier by Mary (Decker)
Slaney (USA). Ines Bibernell (GER) was 3rd at 9:34.27.
40 Years Ago- Carlos Lopes (POR) won the IAAF Crosscountry Championships (WAL) 12K by 16 seconds over
Anthony Simmons (ENG) who, in turn, was three seconds ahead of bronze medalist Bernard
Ford (ENG). Karel Lismont (BEL) was 4th, Francesco Fava (ITA) was 8th, Jacques Boxberger
(FRA) was 8th, Gaston Roelants (BEL) was 13th, Neil Cusack (IRL) was 30th, and Don Kardong
(USA) was 37th. In the women's 5K, Maria-Carmen Valero Omedes (ESP) won by 20 seconds over
Tatyana Kazankina (RUS) with Gabriella Dorio (ITA) another 17 seconds back. The junior
men's championship had Americans going 1-2 with Eric Hulst (CA/USA) getting the gold and
Thom Hunt 13 seconds back for the silver medal. Nathaniel Muir (SCO) was 4rd and Alberto
Salazar (USA) was 4th.
50 Years Ago- Siegfried Herrmann (GER) ran 7:49.0 to win a 3000m indoors in Berlin GER. Jurgen Haase (GER)
was next at 7:56.8 and Wolfgang Hanschke (GER) came in 3rd at 8:01.2.
60 Years Ago- John Landy (AUS) won a 3 mile (outdoor) in Melbourne AUS with a 13:27.4. Ron Clarke (AUS) was
a dnf.
