10 Years Ago- Jan Fitschen (GER) won the 3000m at the European Indoor Cup (FRA) with a 7:58.08, well clear
of runner-up Badreddine Zioini (FRA) at 8:03.63. Francisco-Javier Alves Vas (ESP) was 3rd
at 8:04.78. Yekaterina Volkova (RUS) ran 8:59.70 to win the women's 3000m over Antje Moldner
(GER) at 9:01.07. Tatyana Holovchenko (UKR) was 3rd at 9:04.88 and Christine Bardelle (FRA)
was 4th at 9:09.02.
20 Years Ago- Joaquim Pinheiro (POR) won the 51st running of the Biwa-ko Mainichi (JPN) Marathon by a
full minute over Eric Wainaina (KEN), 2:09:32 to 2:10:37. Abebe Mekonnen (ETH) was 3rd
at 2:11:55 and Patrick Carroll (AUS) was 4th at 2:12:00. Pinheiro was the first runner
to break 2:10 on this course.
30 Years Ago- Katrin Dorre (GER) won her 9th straight marathon at the Nagoya-Chunichi Women's (JPN)
Marathon, running under 2:30 with a 2:29:33. Gabriele Riemann (GER) came in 2nd at
2:32:38 while Ngaire Drake (NZL) was 3rd at 2:38:46. Dorre would win one more marathon
before breaking her streak with a dnf at the 1986 European Championships.
40 Years Ago- At age 43, Jack Foster (NZL) won the Auckland (NZL) Marathon with a 2:16:27. Tony Goode
(NZL) was next at 2:17:06 and Kevin Hamilton (NZL) was 3rd at 2:17:24.
50 Years Ago- Lajos Mecser (HUN) won the 3 mile at the National AAU Indoor Championships (NM/USA) over
Tracy Smith (USA), 13:40.4 to 13:42.4 but Smith got the USA title. Thomas Laris (USA)
was 3rd at 13:47.2 and Leonard "Buddy" Edelen (USA) was 9th at 15:07.0.
60 Years Ago- Kenneth Norris won the English cross title by six seconds over Frederick Norris with
Derek Ibbotson another 18 seconds back in 3rd.
70 Years Ago- Lionel Fox (NZL) won the New Zealand marathon title at Wanganui NZL in 2:40:00.
