10 Years Ago- Meseret Defar (ETH) won the gold medal in the 3000m at the IAAF World Indoor Championships
(RUS), taking the measure of Liliya Shobukhova (RUS), 8:38.80 to 8:42.18. Lidia Chojecka (POL)
got the bronze medal at 8:42.59. In the next day's men's 3000m, Kenenisa Bekele (ETH) took the
gold medal over Saif Saaeed Shaheen (QAT), 7:39.32 to 7:41.28 while Eliud Kipchoge (KEN) settled
for the bronze medal at 7:42.58.
20 Years Ago- Fernanda Ribeiro (POR) ran away from the field at the European Indoor Championships 3000m,
finishing more than 10 seconds ahead of silver medalist Sara Wedlund (SWE), 8:39.49 to 8:50.32.
Marta Dominguez Azpeleta (ESP) was the bronze medalist at 8:53.34. Anacleto Jimenez Lopez (ESP)
won the next day's men's 3000m with a 7:50.06. Christophe Impens (BEL) was a close 2nd at
7:50.19 and Panayiotis Papoulias (GRE) a close 3rd at 7:50.80 as the first four finishers
finished within a span of one second.
30 Years Ago- Ric Sayre (OR/USA) won the Los Angeles (CA/USA) Marathon over Gidamis Shahanga (TAN), 2:12:59
to 2:13:27. Rod Dixon (NZL) was 3rd at 2:14:48. Doug Kurtis (USA) and Kjell-Erik Stahl (SWE)
each added another sub-2:20 to their long lists. Nancy Ditz (CA/USA) defeated Christa
Vahlensieck (GER) to win the women's race, 2:36:27 to 2:36:37. Magda Ilands (BEL) was 3rd at
2:38:25.
40 Years Ago- Bernard Ford (ENG) won the AAA cross title over 14.5 km with a 43:26 clocking.
50 Years Ago- Hidekuni Hiroshima (JPN) won the 12th edition of the Shinpo Naha (JPN) Marathon over Masatsugu
Futsuhara (JPN), 2:31:45 to 2:33:50. At this time, the island of Okinawa was under US military
occupation.
60 Years Ago- Al Lawrence (AUS) won the Australian 6 mile title with a 29:05.2.
