Venlo - The Kenyan athlete Geoffrey Yegon gave a stunning performance during the 11th Weir Venloop, breaking the course record by over 40 seconds. Yegon managed to conserve a lot of energy by never really running upfront, hiding behind the very strong Kenyan pacemaker Kenneth Keter. Four athletes passed the 17 kilometer mark together. At that moment Abraham Kipyatich couldn’t follow the high pace any longer and only three athletes remained, still having Keter in front of the group. Turning into the city, and being cheered on by thousands of voices, the three remaining athletes battled to win the race. Geoffrey Yegon showed both the spectators and his fellow competitors he was the strongest, winning the race in a new course record of 59.44. Only a few seconds later Kenneth Keter finished in 2nd place stopping the clock at 59.48, while the Ethiopian runner Yigrem Demalash finished in 3rd still beating the hour mark in 59.49. Geoffrey Yegon’s time is ranked 2nd in the world at this moment just behind the 59.12 being ran in Milano. The woman’s race had a Kenyan winner as well. Perendis Lekapana won the race in 70.34.
