Athletics: Moscow Marathon set for September 25, 2016

Russia’s largest and most popular running event - the Moscow Marathon will take place on September 25th. In just 4 short years it has grown form a small, local race into a major international sports and fitness event, with over 10% of the participants coming from overseas. Runners from 86 countries have traveled to Moscow to enjoy the scenic route that goes through the main streets in the city center.

We expect this number to grow along with the total number of participants, with our goal being to greet over 30 000 runners, one third more than last year. Since over 10 000 people have applied for the marathon in just two weeks since registration opened, we are very optimistic that this goal will be reached.

The Moscow Marathon race series 2016 will once again consist of 6 unique and exciting races that will span from April 10th to the main event at the end of September.

We start with the First Run, a 5K race around the storied Luzhniki Olympic stadium that celebrates its 60th Anniversary this year. A month later, on May 15th, runners will get a chance to test their endurance at the Moscow Half-Marathon with a new one lap route.

On June 19th, the brightest and most vibrant Color Run will once again paint the town in many colors. This event is just 5K and personal results are not recorded, so it’s all about lighthearted fun and camaraderie.

At nightfall of July 16th we will meet for our Night run, which for the first time will follow the romantic moonlit embankments of Moscow river. The runners will be able to enjoy the spectacular views of cityscapes against the starry sky.

August 14 will mark the Music Half Marathon, where energetic beats by Moscow’s best DJ’s and musicians will greet and empower runners along the 21,1 km loop.

Finally, on September 25th, the races will culminate with the 42.2 kilometers main event. On that day Moscow’s main streets and boulevards will close to car traffic and fill with thousands of runners, volunteers, families and friends and everyone else who wants to celebrate active lifestyle and warmly welcome international guests to our capital.

Those, who are not yet ready to complete the entire race can choose the less grueling (but in no way less important) 10K run, where they will be joined by celebrity ambassadors who have chosen running as their way of life.

For each event, participants will be presented with a t shirt by adidas - general partner of the Moscow Marathon, bearing the symbols of that run. Building a collection of all six versions will be the ultimate honor of the 2016 running season.

As in last season Moscow Marathon will open its routes to a large number of special needs participants and hand bikers - athletes using a special bike operated by hands. We continue to be the only marathon in Russia that features a hand bike race and are doing everything in our power to make it a day that unites everyone in a reverie of triumph of human strength and spirit over any obstacle and adversity. Also, many entrants in every event of the marathon will put on their running shoes to raise awareness and donations for Arifmetika Dobra fund.

The registration for the main event is already open. You can find more info about each run and check out the courses on MoscowMarathon.org. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this remarkable event and to show yourself what you are capable of.

Organizers: Independent Non-Commercial Organization Sports Events Centre
Under the patronage of The Moscow Government and The Department of Sport and Physical culture of the city of Moscow.
