Athletics: This Week in Running for Week Ending April 3rd

10 Years Ago- Ethiopians went 1-2 in the men's 12K at the IAAF World Cross Championships (JPN) with Kenenisa Bekele getting the gold medal and Sileshi Sihene getting the silver, just three seconds back. The previous day's 8K contest for women saw Ethiopian women taking the gold and bronze medals with Tirunesh Dibaba winning and Meselech Melkamu with the bronze medal. Lornah Kiplagat (NED) got the silver medal, five seconds behind Dibaba and 12 seconds ahead of Melkamu. Bekele also won the men's 4K on the first day, one second clear of Isaac Songok (KEN) with the silver medal and another two seconds back was Adil El Kaouch (MAR) for the bronze medal. Gelete Burika (ETH) got the women's 4K gold medal on the second day, two seconds up on Priscah Cherono (KEN) and another second up on Meselech Melkamu who won her second bronze medal in two days.

20 Years Ago- Laban Chege (KEN) won the Paderborner Osterlauf (GER) 10K over Carsten Eich (GER), 28:09 to 28:29. Zacharia Macharia (KEN) was 3rd at 29:08. Katrin Dorre (GER) won the women's 10K in 31:52, well ahead of Tegla Loroupe (KEN) at 32:35 and Birgit Jerschabek (GER) at 32:37. In the half marathon, Wilson Musto (KEN) and Isaac Kariuki (KEN) ran away from the field, clocking 1:03:49 and 1:03:52 respectively. Zdenek Mezulianik (CZE) was 3rd at 1:05:15. Claudia Lokar (GER) defeated a pair of Kenyans to win the women's half marathon in 1:10:09. Joyce Chepchumba was next at 1:10:22 and Angelina Kanana was 3rd at 1:10:38.

30 Years Ago- Thom Huht (USA) won the Nike Cherry Blossom (DC/USA) 10M over Roger Hackney (WAL), 46:15 to 46:41. James Cooper (USA) was 3rd at 47:00. Rosa Mota (POR) won the women's race in 53:09, followed by Lorraine Moller (NZL) at 53:48 and Joan Nesbit (USA) at 54:41. Jan Merrill (USA) was 9th at 56:11.

40 Years Ago- Carl Hatfield (USA) won the 4th running of the Cherry Blossom (DC/USA) 10M in 49:09. Julie Shea (USA) won the women's race in a "world record" 57:04. She would lower this record by nearly a minute the following year at this venuue.

50 Years Ago- Ron Hill (ENG) won the AAA Championships (ENG) 10 mile (track) with a 50:04.0.

60 Years Ago- Kurt Hartung (GER) won the 10th edition of the Paderborner Osterlauf (GER) 25K over Adolf Gruber (AUT), 1:26:55 to 1:27:29.

70 Years Ago- Pedro Gomez (ESP) won the Spanish Championship (ESP) Marathon in 2:47:51.4.

80 Years Ago- Hans Engel (GER) won a marathon in Breslau GER with a 2:43:42.6. Franz Barsicke (GER) was second at 2:49:38.0.

90 Years Ago- Percy Wyer (CAN) won the Auto City (MI/USA) Marathon with a 2:51:30.
