10 APR 2016, Portocolom/Mallorca (Spain) - Emma Bilham and Michael Van Cleven, reigning champion, win the 2016 edition of the Triathlon de Portocolom, one of the earliest triathlon events in Europe. Almost 1.000 athletes have enjoyed a tough and scenic course to start the triathlon season in Mallorca.
Michael Van Cleven got his second victory consecutively at the Triathlon de Portocolom under the 111 format (1 km of swimming, 100km of cycling and 10km of running) in 3h41:56. This young Belgian triathlete overtook all his rivals at the bike segment and run without pressure to the Finish Line. Swedish Fredrik Bäckson, second, made an impressive run leg and finished first runner up. He clocked the fastest running pace to pass Danish Henrik Hyldelund, finally third. The first Spanish was Miguel Angel Fidalgo, fifth overall.
In the female category, Swiss Emma Bilham debuted this season with a great triumph beating Diana Riesler, who was the favourite as she is living and training in Felanitx and Portocolom mostly of the year and wanted to win ‘at home’. Bilham (4h08:13) got a smooth victory, Riesler was second 7 minutes behind and Stefanie Adam (BEL) finished third.
Spanish Lucas Mola, brother of world top class ITU triathlete Mario Mola, and british Emma Pallant achieved the victory on the 55.5 format, in a thrilling race day with spectacular weather conditions.
