BMO Vancouver Marathon reaches total capacity in Marathon, Half Marathon & 8KM races
Vancouver, BC - April 27, 2016 - Registration has reached maximum capacity for a number of races at the 2016 BMO Vancouver Marathon, organized by the local non-profit Vancouver International Marathon Society. More than 16,500 runners, from over 60 countries, have registered t take part in this year’s race weekend celebrating the 45th year of Vancouver’s only marathon.
"This is a record-setting year. We will have the greatest number of participants in our history, which is 45 years long," says Charlene Krepiakevich, Executive Director of the Vancouver International Marathon Society, organizers of the event held annually on the first weekend of May. "While the Marathon remains our marquee event, demand for the 8KM and Half Marathon has exceeded expectations."
The event surpassed its highest total participation number set in 2014 which was 16,428. Organizers are encouraging participants interested in the Kids Run, 2.5KM Walk, and Relay to register now as only 50 spots remain in each race. In addition, a wait list has been established and entries will be awarded on a first-come-first-served basis.
"We’re truly thrilled about the excitement surrounding this year’s event - runners from all ages and abilities have embraced the BMO Vancouver Marathon race weekend." adds Krepiakevich, noting there are still opportunities to get involved with the world-class race through numerous event weekend activities.
Marathon weekend kicks off with a free three-day Health, Sports & Lifestyle Expo at the downtown waterfront Vancouver Convention Centre West, April 28-30. Free and open for all to attend – with more than 130 exhibitors showcasing the latest trends in fitness, health and nutrition – the Expo also features a new Musical Showcase on its outdoor terrace.
Then on Sunday, May 1, 2016, event organizers are rewarding spectators who come out and cheer. $7,000 in total cash prizing is up for grabs for fans courtesy of The Neighbourhood Challenge presented by Chevron. Go to bmovanmarathon.ca/community for more info.
"With this the event’s biggest year in terms of total participation, we really want to see Vancouverites near and far get out and cheer," adds Krepiakevich. "Spectators are a key part of making this a world-class event – having full community support and engagement including 4,000 energized volunteers makes this a special showcase of Vancouver spirit."
Vancouver’s only marathon started in 1972 with 32 finishers, and has grown into a race weekend for everyone featuring six different races this year. "It’s recognized internationally as a top destination race thanks in part to our scenic courses. We are known for our beauty here in BC. It’s spring time. Flowers are blooming. It’s just such a spectacular time of year to run, cheer or volunteer at this great community event," concludes Krepiakevich.
