10 Years Ago- The Kim McDonald (Cardinal Invitational, CA/USA) 10000m saw Americans sweep the podium,
led by Alan Webb at 27:34.72. Close behind were Dathan Ritzenhein and Anthony Famigletti
at 27:35.65 and 27:37.74 respectively. Christian Belz (SUI) was well back in 4th with
a 28:02.46. The women's race was won by Dulce-Maria Rodriguez delaCruz (MEX) with a
32:19.58. Sara Slattery (USA) was 2nd at 32:21.64 and Madai Perez Carillo (MEX) was 3rd
at 32:22.09.
20 Years Ago- Russians dominated the IAU World Challenge, held in Moscow RUS. Russians took the gold
and bronze medals in both the men's and women's races. In the men's race, Konstantin
Santalov collected the gold medal with a 6:32:41 to 6:35:40 win over Jaroslaw Janicki (POL).
Aleksey Kruglov (RUS) was the bronze medalist at 6:36:13. Valentina Shatyayeva (RUS) took
the women's gold medal with a very fine 7:33:10, well ahead of the 7:46:27 posted by silver
medalist Linda Meadows (AUS). Elena Sidorenkova (RUS) completed the podium with her 7:48:25.
30 Years Ago- Osvaldo Faustini (ITA) won the Romatona (ITA) Marathon by more then three minutes over
Gelindo Bordin (ITA), 2:16:03 to 2:19:42. Michelangelo Arena (ITA) came in 3rd at 2:22:27.
Katherine Gregory (USA) prevailed over a much weaker women's field with her 3:23:43.
40 Years Ago- Jos Hermens (NED) extended his own one hour world record, covering a distance of 20.944.
His previous mark was 37 meters shorter, set the previous year. This mark stood for nearly
15 years until Arturo Barrios (MEX) became the first runner to cover more than a half marathon
under an hour on the track (21.101 km).
50 Years Ago- Ron Hill (ENG) won the English 10 mile (outdoor) track title with a 50:04.0.
