10 Years Ago- Kenyan men swept the first eight places at the Lilac Bloomsday (WA/USA) 12K, led by
Gilbert Okari with a 34:14. Charles Munyeki (34:46) and Ernest Kimeli (35:06) completed
the podium. Michael Aish (NZL) was the first non-Kenyan at 35:36. Isabella Ochichi (KEN)
edged Tatyana Hladyr (UKR) by two seconds to win the women's race, 38:38 to 38:40.
Benita Willis (AUS) and Kathy Butler (SCO) followed with 39:04 and 39:29 respectively.
20 Years Ago- Alfredo Vigueras (USA) won the Old Kent River Bank Run (MI/USA) 25K and the USA 25 km
title with a 1:15:21 clocking. Jerry Lawson (USA) and Dan Held (USA) followed with
1:15:34 and 1:15:58 respectively. Jane Welzel (USA) was the women's champion with a
1:29:47 clocking. Americans Lorraine Masuoka and Julia Kirtland followed with 1:30:37
1:30:55 respectively.
30 Years Ago- Joan Benoit (Samuelson) set the still-standing USA record for 25K at the Old Kent River
Bank (MI/USA), clocking a 1:24:43 and winning the women's race by nearly five minutes.
Americans Cyndie Brown and Laura deWald followed with 1:29:41 and 1:33:06 respectively.
In the men's race, Greg Meyer (USA) was a clear winner over Greg Orman (USA) 1:16:38 to
1:17:03. Canadian Dave Edge was 3rd at 1:18:11 and Englishman Tony Staynings was 4th
at 1:18:35.
40 Years Ago- Paul Talkington (OH/USA) ran 2:22:04 to win the inaugural edition of the Case Western
Reserve (OH/USA) Marathon. Michiko Gorman (USA) was the first woman with a 3:02:05.
This race changed its name to the RevCo Cleveland Marathon a few years later and will
hold its 41st running this month.
50 Years Ago- Oscar Moore (USA) defeated John Lawson (USA) over 3 miles at a dual meet between
the University of Kansas and Southern Illinois University, 13:37.4 to 14:04.7.
60 Years Ago- Yoshiaki Kawashima (JPN) ran 2:27:45 to win the 11th edition of the Mainichi Marathon,
held in Osaka JPN. This marathon is now known as the Biwa-ko Mainichi Marathon, is held
in Otsu JPN, and held its 71st running this past March.
