10 Years Ago- Isaac Songok Kiprono (KEN) won the Qatar IAAF Super Tour (QAT) 3000m with a 7:28.97 as
Kenyans went 1-2-3. Augustine Choge was also under 7:30 at 7:29.73 while Eliud Kipchoge
was 3rd at 7:30.47. This race is now the initial contest in the IAAF Diamond League
and features the top women in the 3000m.
20 Years Ago- Marc Davis (USA) edged Jeff Schiebler (CAN) 13:39.71 to 13:39.91 to win the adidas Oregon
Track Classic (OR/USA) 5000m. Kamiel Maase (NED) was 3rd at 13:40.28. In the women's
5000m, Trina Painter (USA) had a four second margin on Kim Jones (USA), 15:38.98 to
15:43.04. Carol Montgomery (CAN) was 3rd at 15:49.81 while Olga Appell (USA) was 4th
at 15:50.74.
30 Years Ago- Betty-Jo (Geiger) Springs (USA) won the Freihofer's Run for Women (NY/USA) 10K
over Martha Cooksey (USA), 32:13 to 32:32. Mary Knisely (USA) was 3rd at 32:37.
In the less competitive 5K, Marisa Sutera (USA) ran 17:22 to win. The 10K was
dropped after the 1991 race. The 5K was moved to the end of the month and continues
at a high level of competition.
40 Years Ago- Chris Wardlaw (AUS) won the 65th edition of the Bay to Breakers (CA/USA) 12.55K
over Jim Nuccio (USA), 37:28 to 37:45. Thirteen year-old Maryetta Boitano (USA)
won the women's race with a 49:20.
50 Years Ago- Norm Higgins (USA) won the 42nd edition of the Yonkers (NY/USA) Marathon by more than
three minutes over Robert Scarf (USA), 2:22:50.8 to 2:26:14. Louis Castagnola (USA)
was 3rd at 2:28:57 and former RRCA president Gar Williams (USA) was 4th at 2:29:16.
Olympian Ron Daws (USA) was 6th (2:32:14), 8-time Yonkers winner John J Kelley (USA)
was 12th (2:41:27), and course certification guru Ted Corbitt (USA) was 22nd (2:51:42).
