10 Years Ago- Zersenay Tadese (ERI) led three runenrs under 28 minutes at the BUPA Great Manchester (ENG)
10K with a 27:36. Fabiano Joseph (TAN) followed with 27:41 and Boniface Kiprop (UGA) was
3rd at 27:58. The women's race saw four runners under 31:20, led by Birhane Adere (ETH) at
31:07. Getenesh Wami (ETH) was next at 31:13 and Nataliya Berkut (UKR) was 3rd at 31:14.
Benita Willis (AUS) was the fastest ever 4th place (still standing) with a 31:17. Aniko
Kalovics (HUN) recorded the still-standing fastest time for 7th place with her 32:03.
20 Years Ago- William Musyoki (KEN) won the 2nd edition of the Prague (CZE) Marathon over Tena Negere
(ETH), 2:12:21 to 2:12:27. Ceslovas Kundrotas (LTU) was 3rd at 2:13:49. The women's
contest went to Alena Vinitskaya (BLR) with a 27 second win over Malgorzata Birbach (POL),
2:37:33 to 2:38:00. Elena Plastinina (UKR) was 3rd at 2:38:16.
30 Years Ago- Ed Eyestone (USA) won the 75th edition of the Bay to Breakers (CA/USA) 7.55M by one minute
over Paul Cummings (USA), 34:33 to 35:33. Mark Curp (USA) was one tick behind Cummings
at 35:34. Rod Dixon (NZL) was 12th at 36:57. Grete Waitz (NOR) bested Joan (Samuelson)
Benoit (USA), 38:45 to 39:10 with Lisa Ondieki (AUS) 3rd at 40:14. Lorraine Moller (NZL)
was 5th at 41:24.
40 Years Ago- Frank Shorter, Bill Rodgers, and Don Kardong made the USA Olympic marathon team at the
USA Olympic trials, clocking 2:11:51, 2:11:58, and 2:13:54 respectively. Tony Sandoval
just missed the team at 2:14:58. Amby Burfoot was 10th at 2:18:56.
50 Years Ago- Anthony Cook won the Australian marathon title (at Ballarat AUS) with a 2:20:44.6
to 2:20:50 victory over Rod McKinney. Henk vanWijngaarden (AUS) was 3rd at 2:23:51.
60 Years Ago- Eric Losthouse (ENG) won a marathon in Peterborough ENG with a 2:31:35.
