VICTORIA, BC. (JUNE 1, 2016) - Subaru IRONMAN 70.3 Victoria presented by Saunders Subaru is fast approaching. This iconic event, now in its 21st year, has grown from a well-loved local race into an international favourite. With 17 countries represented, and a professional division including over 40 athletes - Victoria has truly become a triathlon destination.
The professional field at this event includes a powerhouse collection of athletes, and quite the contingent of Canadian elites. Headlining the women’s race will be Heather Wurtele (CAN); 6-time IRONMAN Champion, and 14-time IRONMAN 70.3/Long Distance Champion. Rachel McBride (CAN), a cycling specialist and 2-time IRONMAN 70.3 Champion will also be seeking the top spot alongside Jen Annett (CAN), Sarah Cameto (USA) and Malindi Elmore (CAN).
On the men’s side - Trevor Wurtele (CAN), the 2013 IRONMAN Canada Champion, will take on Jeff Symonds (CAN) of Penticton BC. Symonds was the 2015 IRONMAN Asia Pacific Champion in Melbourne Australia. Adding to the competition is 2015 IRONMAN 70.3 Silverman Champion Taylor Reid (CAN), Victoria-native and 2014 IRONMAN Australia Champion Eliot Holtham (CAN), and 2008 Olympian Jarrod Shoemaker (USA).
In addition to the competitive professional field, over 2,000 registered age-group athletes are expected to compete at this year’s Subaru IRONMAN 70.3 Victoria. The race will offer 35 coveted age-group qualifying slots to the 2016 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia.
