10 Years Ago- Birhanu Adane (ETH) won the Bolder Boulder (CO/USA) 10K over Alejandro Suarez (MEX).
29:37 to 29:39. Charles Munyeki (KEN) was 3rd at 29:41. Sara Slattery (USA) won
the women's race by one tick over Dorota Gruca (POL), 33:42 to 33:43. Lineth Chepkurui
(KEN) was another tick back at 33:44.
20 Years Ago- Paul Bitok and Daniel Komen went 1-2 for the Kenyans in the 5000m at the Prefontaine
Classic (OR/USA) 13:08.29 and 13:10.14. Robert Kennedy (USA) was 3rd at 13:12.14 while
Norway's Jim Svenoy was a distant 4th at 13:37.18. Sonia O'Sullivan (IRL) won the women's
3000m by more than three seconds over Amy Rudolph (USA), 8:39.33 to 8:42.40. Libbie
Hickman (USA) was 3rd at 8:43.32 and Lynn Jennings (USA) was 4th at 8:43.72.
30 Years Ago- Keith Brantly (USA) won the Riverside Twilight (MA/USA) 5 mile over John Doherty (ENG),
22:39 to 22:43. Bruce Bickford (MA/USA) was 3rd at 22:49. Lesley Ann Lehane (USA)
had a huge margin over Jacqueline Gareau (CAN) in the women's contest, 25:37 to 26:41.
Chris Pfitzinger (NZL) was 3rd at 26:47.
40 Years Ago- Waldemar Cierpinski (GER) ran 2:12:21.2 to win the Olympic Trial Marathon for East
Germany. Hans-Joachim Truppel (GER) was next at 2:13:44 and Bernd Arnhold (GER) was
3rd at 2:14:53.6. Two months later, Cierpinski won the gold medal in the marathon
at the Montreal (CAN) Olympic Games.
50 Years Ago- Tracy Smith (USA) won the 2 mile at the California Relays (CA/USA) by 13 seconds over
Belgian Gaston Roelants, 8:34.4 to 8:47.6. Ron Larrieu (USA) was 3rd at 8:48.8.
60 Years Ago- Jarolsav Sourek (CZE) won a marathon in Bystrice pod Hostynem CZE with a 2:31:29.
