10 Years Ago- Five men went under 13 minutes for 5000m at the Exxon Mobil Bislett Games (NOR). First in
line was Isaac Songok (KEN) at 12:55.79. Kenenisa Bekele (ETH) was next at 12:58.22, Mike
Kipruto (KEN) got third at 12:58.58, Edwin Cheruiyot Soi (KEN) was 4th at 12:59.45, and in
5th was Abraham Cherkos (ETH) at 12:59.53. Tirunesh Dibaba (ETH won the women's 5000m by
some three seconds over Ejagayou Dibaba (ETH), 14:30.40 to 14:33.52. Edith Masai (KEN)
was 3rd at 14:33.84.
20 Years Ago- Four men went under 13 minutes in the 5000m at the Golden Gala (ITA), led by Salah Hissou
(MAR) at 12:50.80. Kenyans Philip Mosima (12:53.72), Moses Kiptanui (12:54.84), and Thomas
Nyariki (12:59.19) followed. Sonia O'Sullivan (IRL) led five under 15 minutes in the women's
5000m, only one of whom was not European. O'Sullivan clocked 14:54.75 to Getenesh Wami's
(ETH) 14:56.48. Julia Vaquero (ESP), Maria Guida (ITA), and Anita Weyermann (SUI) rounded
out the quintet with 14:57.73, 14:58.84, and 14:59.28 respectively.
30 Years Ago- Steve Scott whacked 14 seconds off of Pat Porter's two month old USA 5 km road record in
winning the Carlsbad (CA/USA) 5K with a 13:32. Peter Koech (KEN) was 2nd at 13:33 and
Marcos-Luis Barreto (MEX) was 3rd at 13:34. Paul Williams in 6th, set the still-standing
Canadian record at 13:36. PattiSue Plumer cut Darlene Beckford's USA record by some 23
seconds, winning the women's race in 15:30.2. Anne Audain (NZL) was next at 15:33 and
Carol Keller (USA) was 3rd at 16:13. The Carlsbad 5K is now held in early April.
40 Years Ago- Carlos Lopes (POR) ran 13:24.0 to win a 5000m in Saint-Maur FRA. Abdelkader Zaddam (TUN)
came in 2nd at 13:31.2 and Jean-Marie Conrath (FRA) ran 13:38.8 for 3rd. Gaston Roelants
(BEL) was 9th at 13:50.4.
50 Years Ago- Gerry Lindgren (USA) won the 5000m at the Compton Invitational (CA/USA) over Tracy Smith
(USA), 13:38.0 to 13:45.6. Ron Larrieu (USA) was 3rd at 13:56.4.
60 Years Ago- Emil Zatopek (CZE) won a 5000m in Bratislava SVK with a 14:19.6.
70 Years Ago- Henning Larsen won the Danish marathon title with a 2:44:24.2.
80 Years Ago- Billy Morton (IRL) won the All-Ireland Championship (NACA) marathon with a 2:48:27.
90 Years Ago- Clarence DeMar (USA) won the Sesquicentennial (PA/USA) Marathon over Albert Michelsen (USA),
2:42:50 to 2:51:10. The course was from Valley Forge to Philadelphia.
100 Years Ago- Oscar Bjork defeated Rudolf Wahlen, 2:35:51.7 to 2:49:59.7, for the Swedish marathon title.
The distance was 40 km.
