10 Years Ago- Josphat Boit (KEN) won the NCAA Division I 10000m title with a 28:37.64. Martin Fagan (IRL)
and Simon Bairu (CAN) followed at 28:41.41 and 28:43.37 respectively. Victoria Jackson (USA)
claimed the women's title with a 32:54.72. Clara Peterson (USA) and Mary Davies (NZL) were
next at 33:00.85 and 33:08.00 respectively. In the next day's 5000m, Mary-Teresa Cullen (IRL)
defeated Molly Huddle (USA) 16:01.39 to 16:05.93 for the women's title with Erin Webster (USA)
in 3rd at 16:06.38. The men's race saw Chris Solinsky (USA) prevail over a pack of African
runners in a tactical race, clocking 14:11.71. The 10000m titlist Josphat Boit was 2nd at
14:13.81 while Richard Kiplagat (KEN) got 3rd at 14:13.84.
20 Years Ago- Tegla Loroupe (KEN) won the Advil Mini-Marathon (NY/USA) 10K by six seconds over Joyce Chepchumba
(KEN), 32:13 to 32:19. Anne-Marie Lauck (USA) was 3rd at 32:24 and 40-year old Anne Audain
(NZL/USA) was 17th at 36:43.
30 Years Ago- Arturo Barrios (MEX) ran away from Gerard Donakowski (USA), 17:34 to 17:39 to win the
Steamboat Classic (IL/USA) 4M. John Tuttle (USA) was 3rd at 17:52. Lorraine Moller (NZL)
was a clear winner in the women's race with a 20:24 clocking. Karen Lutzke (USA) and
Rebecca Kirsininkas (USA) followed at 20:51 and 21:34 respectively. Camille Estes (USA)
was 6th at 22:18.
40 Years Ago- Richard Buerkle had a ten second margin on Marty Liquori to win the USA (AAU) 5000m title
13:31.2 to 13:41.0. Paul Geis was 3rd at 13:43.8. Jan Merrill took the 3000m title with
an 8:57.17. In the 10000m, Edward Leddy (IRL) came in first with a 28:46.0 but the USA
title went to Duncan Macdonald at 28:58.6. In third place was David M Smith (USA) at
29:09.8 and Tony Sandoval (USA) was 4th at 29:14.0.
50 Years Ago- Graham Taylor (ENG) took the measure of James Joseph Hogan (IRL) in winning the 53rd running
of the Polytechnic (ENG) Marathon, 2:19:04 to 2:19:27. Ron Hill (ENG) was 3rd at 2:20:55.
60 Years Ago- Sandor Iharos (HUN) won the 3000m at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial (POL) with a 7:59.4.
Laszlo Tabori (HUN) and Jerzy Chromik (POL) followed with 8:00.8 and 8:02.2 respectively.
70 Years Ago- Donald McNab Robertson won the Scottish marathon title with a 2:45:39.
80 Years Ago- Albert Norris (ENG) won the 23rd edition of the Polytechnic (ENG) Marathon, defeating
Tommy Lalande (RSA), 2:35:20 to 2:36:18. Violet Piercy (GBR) ran unofficially, finishing
in 4:25:xx, under the world best at that time but this course is point-to-point so her
mark does not appear in the ARRS record progression list.
90 Years Ago- Harold Wood (ENG) won the Sporting Chronicle Challenge Cup (Manchester ENG) with a
2:43:51.8. Duncan-McLeod Wright (ENG) was 2nd at 2:51:12.4.
100 Years Ago- Gustav Kinn (SWE) on the Uppsala Districk Championship (SWE) Marathon in 2:59:50.
