10 Years Ago- Russians went 1-2 at the Grandma's (MN/USA) Marathon, Sergey Lukin winning in 2:14:30 and
Pavel Andreyev (RUS) next at 2:16:46. Jae-Young Hyung (KOR) was 3rd at 2:18:22. In the
women's race, Svetlana Nekhorosh (UKR) was declared the winner with a 2:37:33 after Halina
Karnatevicz (BLR) was disqualified. Maria-Cleoce Portilla Cruz (PER) was 2nd at 2:38:20
and Mary Akor (USA) was 3rd at 2:39:42.
20 Years Ago- Todd Williams, Joseph LeMay, and Dan Middleman got the top three spots for men in the USA
Olympic Trials (GA/USA) 10000m clocking 28:46.58, 29:06.89, and 29:13.81 respectively.
Lynn Jennings, Mary (Decker) Slaney, and Amy Rudolph did likewise in the women's 5000m
with 15:28.18, 15:29.39, and 15:29.91 respectively.
30 Years Ago- Nanette Davis won the USA 10000m title over Lynn Nelson, 32:29.86 to 32:30.24. Martha
Cooksey was 3rd at 32:34.73. Gerard Donakowski took the men's title with a one second
win over Marcus Nenow, 28:21.11 to 28:22.13. Ed Eyestone was 3rd at 28:33.10.
40 Years Ago- Grete Waitz (NOR) lowered her own 3000m world record with "solo" 8:45.4 in Oslo NOR.
Denmark's Dorthe Rasmussen was a distant 2nd at 9:23.2. Waitz' mark would only stand
for six weeks, until Lyudmila Bragina (RUS) regained the record with a 8:27.12.
50 Years Ago- Michel Jazy (FRA) won the 3000m at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial (POL) with a 7:51.8.
Siegfried Herrmann (GER) was next at 7:55.2 and Keisuke Sawaki (JPN) was 3rd at 7:57.0.
60 Years Ago- Gordon Pirie (ENG) lowered the world 5000m record to 13:36.8, defeating former WR-holder
Vladimir Kuts (UKR) who came in at 13:39.6. Kuts had lost his record to Sandor Iharos
(HUN) the previous year. Iharos mark was 13:40.6 so both Pirie and Kuts went under the
record.
70 Years Ago- Horace Oliver (WAL) won the Polytechnic (ENG) Marathon with a 2:38:12.
80 Years Ago- Harold Webster won the Canadian marathon title with a 3:01:06 (race held in Hamilton ON/CAN).
Gerard Cote (PQ/CAN) was 5th at 3:06:30.
