10 Years Ago- Bernard Lagat edged Matthew Tegenkamp 13:14.32 to 13:15.00 to win the USA 5000m title.
Dathan Ritzenhein was 3rd at 13:16.61. Lauren Fleshman took the USA women's 5000m title
over Kara Goucher, 15:12.37 to 15:14.13. Blake Russell was 3rd at 15:19.07. Molly Huddle
was 9th at 15:44.66. The women's 10000m title went to Amy Rudolph at 32:25.56 with Sara
Slattery (32:29.97) and Samia Akbar (32:41.84) following. Jorge Torres finished more than
four seconds ahead of Mebrahtom Keflezighi for the men's 10000m title, 28:14.43 to 28:18.74.
Dan Browne was 3rd at 28:19.32. Championships were held in Indianapolis IN/USA.
20 Years Ago- Domingos Castro (POR) won the Azkoitia-Azpeitia (ESP) Half Marathon over Alberto Juzdado
Lopez (ESP), 1:01:57 to 1:02:00. Benedict Ako (TAN) and Martin Fiz (ESP) followed with
1:02:37 and 1:02:51 respectively. Rocio Rios Perez (ESP) was more than four minutes ahead
of runner-up Griselda Gonzalez Santilo (ARG), 1:11:18 to 1:15:24. Josefa Cruz Benitez (ESP)
was 3rd at 1:16:18.
30 Years Ago- Arturo Barrios (MEX) won the Cascade Run Off (OR/USA) 15K, vanquishing a pair of Kenyans
with his 42:36. Ibrahim Hussein and Michael Musyoki followed with 42:43 and 43:30
respectively. Jon Sinclair (USA) was 4th at 43:39. Lorraine Moller (NZL) and Grete Waitz
(NOR) both went under 50 minutes with 49:09 and 49:38 respectively. Debra Elsmore (NZL)
was 3rd at 50:19 and Maureen Roben (CO/USA) in 4th was the first USA at 50:23.
40 Years Ago- Richard Buerkle's 13:26.6 won the US Olympic Trials (OR/USA) 5000m. Duncan Macdonald was
2nd at 13:29.5 and Paul Geis was 3rd at 13:38.5. Don Kardong was 4th (time unknown).
50 Years Ago- Lajos Mecser (HUN) won the 5000m at the Weltklasse (Zurich SUI) with a 13:48.4.
60 Years Ago- Siegfried Herrmann (GER) win the 3000m at the ISTAF meeting (GER) with a 7:59.0.
70 Years Ago- Emil Zatopek (CZE) ran 8:33.2 to win a 3000m in Zlín CZE.
80 Years Ago- Dennis Morgan won the Welsh marathon title with a 3:26:11 at Newport WAL.
90 Years Ago- Jack O'Reilly (IRL) won the All-Ireland Champions (NACA) Marathon with a 2:58:30. The
distance was rather short of a marathon at 39.75 km.
100 Years Ago- Johannes Andersen (NOR) ran 2:55:15 to win a marathon (40.2 km) in Oslo NOR.
110 Years Ago- Thomas Hicks (USA) ran 3:02:00 to win the Central Association AAU (IL/USA) Marathon
(ca 25 miles). Alex Thibeau (USA) and Sidney Hatch (USA) followed with 3:05:45 and
3:08:15 respectively.
