Athletics: 2016 Run for a Reason Charity Program Raised $1.6 Million-Plus for Charities

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Light of Life Rescue Ministries and Children’s Hospital Foundation each raised $100,000+ via DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Run for a Reason charity program

Pittsburgh - P3R has announced that the Run for a Reason charity program presented by Bank of America raised more than $1.6 million during the 2016 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon season. Since the Run for a Reason charity program launched in 2009, participants have raised more than $9 million for local, national and global causes.

ch year the Run for a Reason charity program inspires runners to run for a greater good, connect with runners who share the same passion and raise hundreds of dollars for a charity close to their heart,” said P3R CEO Patrice Matamoros. “We are proud to grow this program each year and have true impact in the Pittsburgh community and beyond.”

Jessi Marsh, from Monroeville, Pa., was the top individual fundraiser with more than $27,000 in donations for the Light of Life Rescue Mission. Marsh completed the FedEx Ground Pittsburgh Marathon Relay with her team Wonder Women, while also battling her second bout of colon cancer.

More than 3,000 charity runners participating across all of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events inspired more than 24,000 charity donations for 110 local and national charities.

The charities who received the most donations include:

  • Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, $165,860
  • Light of Life Ministries, $136,901
  • Children’s Hospital Foundation, $130,989
  • Animal Rescue League Shelter & Wildlife Center, $99,414
  • Leukemia & Lymphoma Society: Team in Training, $71,211

"Being an official charity of the Pittsburgh Marathon has been a game changer for Light of Life," said Doug Smith, manager of outreach and major gifts at Light of Life Rescue Mission. "It has enabled us to engage our supporters in a meaningful way, introduce us to hundreds of new donors, and has become our second largest fundraiser. We are so glad we decided to become a charity four years ago. Building and training our Marathon team has become one of our favorite things to do each year."
