10 Years Ago- Anna Pichrtova (CZE) won the European Mountain Championships (CZE) 7.7K by a wide margin
of 44 seconds over Mateja Kosovelj (SLO). Vittoria Salvini (ITA) was another 80 seconds
back in the bronze medal position. The men's (11.2K) title went to Marco Gaiardo (ITA)
who finished eight seconds ahead of Selahattin Selcuk (TUR). Julien Rancon (FRA) collected
the bronze medal, another nine seconds back.
20 Years Ago- Stephen Mayaka (KEN) won the Sapporo International (JPN) Half Marathon over Andres Espinosa
Perez (MEX), 1:02:02 to 1:02:25. Toshiyuki Hayata (JPN) was 3rd at 1:02:31. Kazumi Sakaguchi
(JPN) and Kanako Haginaga (JPN) both went under 70 minutes in the women's race with 1:09:40 and
1:09:47 respectively. Esther Wanjiru Maina (KEN) finished 3rd at 1:10:54.
30 Years Ago- Toshihiko Seko (JPN) won the 5000m at the Peugeot Talbot Games (ENG) with a 13:24.29. Wilson
Waigwa (KEN) was runnerup at 13:26.38 while Hisatoshi Shintaku (JPN) was 3rd at 13:28.88.
Stephen Binns (ENG) and Stephen Jones (WAL) followed at 13:29.78 and 13:30.60 respectively.
40 Years Ago- Margherita Gargano (ITA) won the Italian 3000m title with a 9:12.2. Following were Silvana
Cruciata (ITA) at 9:17.0 and Cristina Tomasini (ITA) at 9:23.2. Venanzio Ortis (ITA) won
the men's 10000m title with a 29:31.0 clocking.
50 Years Ago- Ronald Clarke (AUS) won the AAA Championships (ENG) 3 mile by more than 17 seconds over Henk
Altmann (RSA), 12:58.2 to 13:15.8 but the English title went to Dick Taylor in 3rd place
(13:17.6). William Baillie (NZL) was 4th at 13:18.8.
60 Years Ago- Allan Lawrence (AUS) ran 29:50.8 to win for 10000m in Sydney AUS.
70 Years Ago- Jack Holden (ENG) won the Midland Counties Championship (ENG) Marathon with a 2:46:34.
80 Years Ago- Donald McNab Robertson (SCO) won the AAA Championship (ENG) Marathon by one second over
Ernie Harper (GBR), 2:35:02.4 to 2:35:03.6. Pat Dengis (USA) was 4th at 2:40:19.
90 Years Ago- Arthur Reichmann (GER) won the Deutsche Kampfspiele (GER) Marathon with a 2:58:28.9.
Franz Wanderer (GER) was second at 3:01:10.
100 Years Ago- Jakob Westberg (SWE) won the Swedish Games (SWE) Marathon (40 km) with a 2:41:00.4. Rudolf
Wahlen (SWE), Oscar Bjork (SWE), and Gustav Kinn (SWE) followed with 2:41:23, 2:42:07.9,
and 2:43:29.6 respectively.
