10 Years Ago- Kenenisa Bekele (ETH) led nine others under 13 minutes in the 5000m at the Golden Gala (ITA).
Bekele ran 12:51.44 to Saif Saaeed Shaheen's (QAT) 12:51.98. Isaac Songok (KEN) was 3rd at
12:52.39. This was a record for the most men under 13 minutes in one race, a record that
stood until the Meeting Areva (Paris FRA) in 2012 when eleven men went under 13 minutes.
In the women's race, Ethiopians swept the first four places, led by Tirunesh Dibaba at
14:52.37. Meseret Defar, Gelete Burika, and Birhane Adere followed with 14:53.51, 14:53.51,
and 14:54.36 respectively.
20 Years Ago- Joseph Kimani (KEN) won the Utica Boilermaker (NY/USA) 15K over Simon Rono (KEN), 42:40 to
43:09. Khalid Khannouchi (MAR) was 3rd, edging Peter Githuka (KEN) by a nose, both given
times of 43:11. Catherine Ndereba (KEN) won the women's race by a wide margin over Nadia
Prasad (NCL), 48:55 to 50:08. Zola Pieterse (RSA) was 3rd at 50:15.
30 Years Ago- Vincent Rousseau (BEL) won the 3000m at the Nikaia (Nice FRA) meet with a 7:42.15. Stefano
Mei (ITA) was 2nd at 7:42.85 while Jose-Luis Gonzalez (ESP) came in 3rd at 7:44.25.
40 Years Ago- Gerard Margerit (FRA) won the 4th edition of the Marvejols-Mende (FRA) 22.4K over Bernard
Bobes (FRA), 1:19:54 to 1:20:06. Viviane Murat (FRA) was the first woman at 1:51:56.
This race will hold its 44th running this month.
50 Years Ago- OLympian Tracy Smith (USA) bested fellow Olympians Billy Mills and George Young at the
All-American Invitational (CA/USA) 5000m, clocking a 13:42.0. Mills was 2nd at 13:52.6
and Young was 3rd at 14:01.2.
60 Years Ago- Sandor Iharos won the Hungarian 10000m title over Jozsef Kovacs, 28:42.8 to 29:25.6.
70 Years Ago- Erik Jonsson won the Swedish marathon title with a 2:26:48.8 (40 km) at Selånger SWE.
