10 Years Ago- Assefa Melese Gashaw (ETH) won the 34th edition of the Marvejols-Mende (FRA) 22.4K over
compatriot Tariku Jifar Robi (ETH), 1:12:32 to 1:12:41. James Kibocha (FRA) was 3rd at
1:13:28. Roberto Barbi (ITA) in 16th place was the first runner not born in Africa.
Aniko Kalovics (HUN) won the women's race over Malika Asahssah (MAR), 1:24:01 to 1:24:34.
Mirriam Wangari (KEN) was 3rd at 1:25:49.
20 Years Ago- Magnus Michelsson (AUS) won the 18th edition of the JAL Gold Coast (AUS) Marathon with
a 2:20:20. Michael McIntyre (AUS) and Tsuyoshi Arichi (JPN) followed with 2:21:39 and
2:22:00 respectively. Aussies swept the top four places in the women's race, led by
Sylvia Rose (AUS) at 2:40:17. Sherryn Rhodes (AUS) was next at 2:44:34, Bev Lucas (AUS)
was 3rd at 2:47:24, and Tanya-Saree Warrick (AUS) was 4th at 2:48:36.
30 Years Ago- Peter Pfitzinger (USA) won the 10th edition of the San Francisco (CA/USA) Marathon by
nearly two minutes over Gidamis Shahanga (TAN), 2:13:29 to 2:15:16. David Olds (CA/USA)
was 3rd at 2:15:18. Maria Trujillo (MEX) won the women's race by a similar margin over
Janine Aiello (USA), 2:37:58 to 2:39:30. Sharlet Gilbert (CA/USA) was 3rd at 2:39:42.
Gilbert ran a 3:49:57 at the Big Sur (CA/USA) Marathon this past April, at age 65.
40 Years Ago- Lasse Viren (FIN) won the gold medal in the 10000m at the Olympic Games (PQ/CAN) with
a 27:40.38. Carlos Lopes (POR) got the silver medal with his 27:45.17 while Brendan
Foster (ENG) got the bronze medal at 27:54.92. Other notables included Mariano Haro
(ESP) at 6th (28:00.28), Jos Hermens (NED) at 10th (28:25.04), Karel Lismont (BEL) in
11th (28:26.48), and Christopher Wardlaw (AUS) in 12th at 28:29.91.
50 Years Ago- Ron Clarke (AUS) won the 10000m at the Los Angeles Times International Games
(CA/USA), trouncing Tracy Smith (USA), 28:13.0 to 29:00.0. William Baillie (NZL)
was 3rd at 29:34.4.
60 Years Ago- Franjo Mihalic (SER) won the Balkan Games (SER) Marathon with a 2:16:25.0 (short
course). Osman Cosgul (TUR) got the silver medal at 2:19:54.6 while the bronze
medal went to Franjo Skrinjar (CRO) at 2:20:51.6.
70 Years Ago- Squire Stevens Yarrow (ENG) won the English (AAA) marathon title by a nose over
Donald McNab Robertson (SCO), 2:43:14.4 to 2:43:14.6.
