10 Years Ago- Kenyans swept the first seven places in the men's race at the 9th edition of the TD Banknorth
Beach to Beacon (ME/USA) 10K, led by Thomas Nyariki who ran 27:47.5. Lawrence Rotich was next
at 28:03.8 while Gilbert Okari was 3rd at 28:08.9. Alevtina Ivanova (RUS) lowered Catherine
Ndereba's (KEN) course record to 31:25.7. Edna Kiplagat (KEN) was nearly a minute back in 2nd
with a 32:22.7. Luminita Talpos (ROM) was 3rd at 32:26.3.
20 Years Ago- Josiah Thugwane (RSA) won the men's gold medal in the marathon at the Olympic Games (GA/USA),
clocking a 2:12;36 for a three second win over Bong-Ju Lee (KOR). Eric Wainaina (KEN)
was the bronze medalist at 2:12:44. Other notables included Martin Fiz (ESP) in 4th (2:13:20),
Stephen Moneghetti (AUS) in 7th (2:14:35), Danilo Goffi (ITA) in 9th (2:15:08), Salvatore
Bettiol (ITA) in 20th (2:17:27), Rolando Vera (ECU) in 22nd (2:17:40), Domingos Castro (POR)
in 25th (2:18:03), and former WR-holder Belayneh Dinsamo (ETH) who was a dnf.
30 Years Ago- Ingrid Kristiansen (NOR) knocked more than ten seconds off of Zola (Pieterse) Budd's (RSA)
world record for 5000m with a solo 14:37.33 in Stockholm SWE. Dorthe Rasmussen (DEN) was a
distant 2nd at 16:02.20 and Sissel Grottenberg (NOR) was 3rd at 16:08.41.
40 Years Ago- Aldo Allegranza (ITA) won the 3rd edition of the venerable Sierre-Zinal (SUI) 29K mountain
race with a 2:46:33. Ron Hill (ENG) was 5th at 2:53:00. Annick Loir (FRA) was the first
woman finisher at 3:26:35. This race will hold it 43rd running this month.
50 Years Ago- Naftali Temu (KEN) defeated WR-holder Ron Clarke (AUS) to win the gold medal in the 6 mile
at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games (JAM), 27:14.6 to 27:39.42. James Alder (SCO)
collected the bronze medal at 28:15.4. Ron Hill (ENG) was 5th at 28:42.6 and William
Baillie (NZL) was 9th at 30:01.0.
60 Years Ago- Vladimir Kuts (UKR) prepped for his WR in the 10000m the following month by winning the
Soviet (RUS) 10000m title with a 28:57.8. Ivan Chernyavskiy (UKR) was 2nd at 29:50.4
and Aleksandr Anufriyev (RUS) was 3rd at 29:54.0. Pyotr Bolotnikov (RUS) in 4th (30:05.0)
would later break Kuts' record.
70 Years Ago- A Harrington (IRL) won the All-Ireland (NACA) Championship with a 3:10:55.
80 Years Ago- Finns swept the medals in the 10000m at the Olympic Games (GER), with Ilmari Salminen
first across the line in 30:15.4. Arvo Askola at 30:15.6 and Volmari Iso-Hollo at 30:20.2
completed the medals.
90 Years Ago- Gustav Kinn (SWE) won the Swedish marathon title with a 2:39:19.2 (40 km).
