10 Years Ago- Stefano Baldini (ITA) won the gold medal in the mareathon at the European Championships (SWE)
with a 2:11:32. Viktor Rothlin (SUI) was in the silver medal position at 2:11:50 and Julio
Rey (ESP) got the bronze medal with his 2:12:37. In the same day's 5000m for men, Jesus Espana
Cobo (ESP) got the gold medal at 13:44.70 with Mohamed Farah (ENG) only 0.09 seconds back for
the silver medal. Juan-Carlos Higuero Mate (ESP) was the bronze medalist with a 13:46.48.
Marta Dominguez (ESP) took the gold medal in the previous day's 5000m with a narrow win over
Liliya Shobukhova (RUS), 14:56.18 to 14:56.57. Elvan Abeylegesse (TUR) was 3rd at 14:59.29 and
Joanne Pavey (ENG) was 4th at 15:01.41. Pavey was 5th in this year's European Championships
and 15th in this year's Olympic Games 10000m. And finally, Ulrike Maisch (GER) won the gold
medal in the marathon over Olivera Jevtic (SER), 2:30:01 to 2:30:27. Irina Permitina (RUS)
was the bronze medalist at 2:30:53.
20 Years Ago- Daniel Komen (KEN) ran 7:25.16 to win the 3000m at the Herculis Vittel (MON) meeting, leading
four others (all Kenyans) under 7:30. Thomas Nyariki ran 7:27.75 for 2nd and Paul Bitok outran
Paul Tergat for 3rd, 7:28.41 to 7:28.70. This race established the still-standing best times
for places 4 thru 9. Gabriela Szabo (ROM) won the women's 3000m with a narrow 8:36.07 to 8:36.12
win over Roberta Brunet (ITA). Paula Radcliffe (ENG) finished 3rd at 8:37.07.
30 Years Ago- Ingrid Kristiansen (NOR) dominated the field in the 3000m at the Weltklasse (SUI) meeting,
nearly five seconds ahead of runner-up Maricica Puica (ROM), 8:34.10 to 8:39.06. Zola Budd
(Pieterse) (running for ENG) was 3rd at 8:45.76. Said Aouita (MAR) ran 7:32.54 to win the
men's 3000m. Sydney Maree (PA/USA) was well back in 2nd with a 7:38.26. Alberto Cova (ITA)
won the men's 5000m over Pierre Deleze (SUI), 13:15.86 to 13:16.00. Stefano Mei (ITA) was
3rd at 1316.28.
40 Years Ago- Frank Shorter (USA) won the 4th edition of the Falmouth Road Race (MAUSA) 7M over Bill
Rodgers (USA), 33:14 to 33:36. Randy Thomas (USA) was 3rd at 34:10, Alberto Salazar
(USA) was 5th at 34:22, and Amby Burfoot (USA) was 6th at 34:31. Joan (Samuelson) Benoit
(USA) was the first woman at 43:08 with Eleonora deMendonca (BRA) in 2nd (time unknown).
50 Years Ago- James Alder (SCO) took the measure of William Adcocks, 2:22:07.8 to 2:22:13 to win the
gold medal in the marathon at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games (JAM). Michael
Ryan (NZL) was the bronze medalist at 2:27:59. Jeff Julian (NZL) was 5th (2:32:45.4)
and Ron Clarke (AUS) was a dnf.
60 Years Ago- Monte Wolford (CO/USA) won the inaugural edition of the Pikes Peak (CO/USA) marathon
with a 5:39:58. This race will hold its 61st running this month.
70 Years Ago- Emil Zatopek (CZE) won the Czechoslovak 5000m title with a 14:48.0.
80 Years Ago- Kee-Jung Sohn (KOR running for JPN) won the gold medal in the marathon at the Olympic
Games (GER) with a 2:29:19.2. Ernie Harper (GBR) was the silver medalist at 2:31:23.2
and Sung-Yong Nam (KOR, also running for JPN) was the bronze medalist at 2:31:42.0.
90 Years Ago- Matheus Marcondes (BRA) won the Paulista marathon, held in Sao Paulo BRA with a 2:48:24.
