10 Years Ago- Kenenisa Bekele (ETH) outkicked Isaac Songok (KEN) to win the 5000m at the Weltklaase
Zürich (SUI), 12:48.25 to 12:48.66. Eliud Kipchoge (KEN) was well back in 3rd with a
12:57.69. Tirunesh Dibaba (ETH) won the women's 5000m with a 14:45.73. Edith Masai (KEN)
was 2nd at 14:48.22 while Birhane Adere (ETH) was 3rd at 14:49.03. Vivian Cheruiyot (KEN)
was 5th at 14:52.10.
20 Years Ago- Eliud Barngetuny (KEN) led a pack of five runners under 7:50 in the 3000m at the Tampere
Games (FIN) with a 7:47.65. Michal Bartoszak (POL) and Bernard Barmasai (KEN) were close
behind at 7:48.01 and 7:48.40 respectively. Tuija Toivonen (FIN) won the less competitive
women's race over Kirsi Mattila (FIN), 9:27.97 to 9:31.00.
30 Years Ago- Said Aouita (MAR) ran away from the field in the 3000m at the Weltklasse in Cologne (GER),
winning easily in 7:32.23. Paul Kipkoech (KEN) came in 2nd at 7:39.38 and Charles Cheruiyot
(KEN) was 3rd at 7:48.83. Maricica Puica (ROM) won the women's 3000m with a 8:37.84.
40 Years Ago- Dick Quax (NZL) defeated Carlos Lopes (POR) over 5000m at the Weltklasse Zurich (SUI),
13:24.07 to 13:25.52. Jacques Boxberger (FRA) was 3rd at 13:26.60 and Markus Ryffel (SUI)
was 4th at 13:32.80.
50 Years Ago- Allan Rushmer (ENG) bested Mohamed Gammoudi (TUN) by a nose over 5000m at the British Games
(ENG), both given times of 13:45.0. Lajos Mecser (HUN) was 3rd at 13:46.2, Naftali Temu (KEN)
was 4th at 13:48.8 and Kazimierz Zimny (POL) finished 5th in 14:05.2.
60 Years Ago- Herbert Schade won the West German 10000m title with a 29:38.8. Gustav Disse (GER) won the
next day's marathon title with a 2:32:23.2.
70 Years Ago- Mikko Hietanen (FIN) won the marathon gold medal in the European Championships (NOR) by more
than a minute over compatriot Vaino Muinonen, 2:24:55 to 2:26:08. Yakov Punko (RUS) collected
the bronze medal at 2:26:21.
