10 Years Ago- Vivian Cheruiyot (KEN) won the 3000m at the Palio della Quercia (Rovereto ITA), edging
Jane Wanjiku (KEN) 8:45.32 to 8:45.97. Nuria Fernandez Dominguez (ESP) was a close 3rd
at 8:46.30. The men's 5000m was also close with Bado Worku Merdessa (ETH) edging out
Sultan Khamis Zaman (QAT) for the win, 13:20.94 to 13:21.06. Wilson Busienei Kipkemei
(UGA) was a close 3rd in 13:21.19.
20 Years Ago- Daniel Komen (KEN) ran 13:02.62 to win the 5000m at the ISTAF (Berlin GER) meeting.
Robert Kennedy (IN/USA) and Paul Koech (KEN) had a close battle for 2nd with Kennedy
prevailing, 13:06.12 to 13:06.45.
30 Years Ago- Ingrid Kristiansen (NOR) won by half a lap over Olga Bondarenko (RUS) in the 10000m at the
European Championships (GER), 30:23.25 to 30:57.21. Ulrike Bruns (GER) collected the bronze
medal at 31:19.76. Gelindo Bordin and Orlando Pizzolato went 1-2 for the Italian team in the
same day's marathon, 2:10:54 to 2:10:57. Herbert Steffny (GER) won the bronze medal at 2:11:30.
Hugh Jones (ENG) was 5th at 2:11:49 and Steve Jones (WAL) was 20th at 2:22:12. Jack Buckner (ENG)
won the following day's 5000m with a 13:10.15. Stefano Mei (ITA) got the silver medal at
13:11.57 while Tim Hutchings (ENG) got the bronze medal at 13:12.88.
40 Years Ago- Garry Bjorklund (USA) ran 13:45.46 to win the 5000m at the Rieti Meeting (ITA) over Venanzio
Ortis (ITA) at 13:46.73. Francesco Fava (ITA) was 3rd at 13:53.72..
50 Years Ago- Jurgen Haase (GER) got a one second win over Lajos Mecser (HUN) to win the gold medal in the
10000m at the European Championships (HUN), 28:26.0 to 28:27.0. Leonid Mikitenko (KAZ/URS)
ran 28:32.2 for the bronze medal.
60 Years Ago- Douglas Kyle won the Canadian 10000m title with a one lap short 29:18.2.
