10 Years Ago- Kenenisa Bekele (ETH) ran 12:57.74 to win the 5000m at the ISTAF meeting (Berlin GER).
More than seven seconds back was Tariku Bekele (ETH) at 13:04.83 and Abraham Cherkos
Feleke (ETH) was 3rd at 13:05.40, giving the Ethiopians a podium sweep. Bernard Lagat
was 9th at 13:12.44. This year at ISTAF, Lagat ran 3000m in 7:43.63 for a world age-41
record. In the women's 5000m, the Ethiopians got a 1-2-3-4 sweep, led by Meseret Defar
who was closely followed by Tirunesh Dibaba, 15:02.51 to 15:02.87. Meselech Melkamu
(15:05.82) and Gelete Burika (15:07.45) completed the sweep. The men's 3000m went to
Jesus Espana Cobo (ESP) at 7:56.36 with Adrian Blincoe (NZL, 7:56.87) and Vyacheslav
Shabunin (RUS, 7:57.35) close behind.
20 Years Ago- Joseph Kamau (KEN) won the New Haven Road Race (CT/USA) 20K over Joseph LeMay (USA),
58:33 to 59:37 with LeMay collecting the USA title. Daniel Kihara (KEN) was 3rd at
1:00:06. Senoria Clarke (USA) won the less competitive women's race over Danuta Bartoszek
(CAN), 1:09:51 to 1:10:01. Maria-Luisa Servin (MEX) was 3rd at 1:10:55.
30 Years Ago- Bill Reifsnyder (USA) went under an hour at the New Haven Road Race (CT/USA) 20K with a
59:53 clocking. Jon Sinclair (USA) and Pat Petersen (USA) followed with 1:00:21 and 1:01:01
respectively. Bill Rodgers (USA) was 13th at 1:06:28. Nancy Conz (MA/USA) ran away from
Susan Faber (USA) to win the women's race, 1:10:35 to 1:12:23.
40 Years Ago- Frank Shorter (USA) won the Charleston Distance Classic (WV/USA) 15M over Gary Tuttle (USA),
1:14:26 to 1:15:14. Lucien Rosa (SRI) was 3rd at 1:15:34. Kim Merritt (USA) was a good six
minutes ahead of Gayle Barron (USA) in winning the women's race, 1:28:50 to 1:34:51. Winning
times at this year's edition were 1:21:42 for the men and 1:33:14 for the women.
50 Years Ago- Michel Jazy (FRA) won the gold medal in the 5000m at the European Championships (HUN) with
a 13:42.8. Harald Norporth (GER) was the silver medalist at 13:44.0 and Bernd Diessner (GER)
ran 13:47.8 for the bronze medal. In the same day's marathon, James Joseph Hogan (IRL) got the
gold medal with his 2:20:04.6. Aurele Vandendriessche (BEL) was next at 2:21:43.6 and Gyula
Toth (HUN) was 3rd at 2:22:02.0. Ron Hill (ENG) was 12th at 2:26:04.8.
60 Years Ago- Sandor Iharos (HUN) defeated Miklos Szabo (HUN) over 5000m (Stockholm SWE), 13:46.6 to 13:54.4.
70 Years Ago- Stefano Natale (ITA) won the Italian marathon title with a 3:00:34.
80 Years Ago- Henry Palme (SWE) won the Swedish marathon title with a 2:33:09 (40 km).
90 Years Ago- Harvey Frick (USA) defeated Percy Wyer (CAN) to win a marathon in Montreal (PQ/CAN), 2:50:27.6
to 2:51:10.
100 Years Ago- Runar Ohman (SWE) won a marathon over a good Swedish field with his 2:39:40.4. William Gruner
was next at 2:41:10.3, Oscar Bjork was 3rd at 2:49:12.5, and Gustav Kinn was 6th at 2:51:19.7.
The distance was 40 km.
110 Years Ago- A Bosquet (BEL) won the Mechelen-Brussels (BEL) Marathon in 2:07:18. The distance was about 36 km.
