10 Years Ago- Tirunesh Dibaba (ETH) and Meseret Defar (ETH) went 1-2 in the 5000m at the IAAF World
Athletics Final (GER) in an all ETH-KEN tactical race. Dibaba ran 16:04.77 with Defar
just 0.01 seconds back. Isabella Ochichi (KEN) was 3rd at 16:07.39. In the men's 3000m,
Tariku Bekele (ETH) defeated a passel of Kenyans with a 7:38.98. He was followed by
seven Kenyans, foremost of which was Edwin Cheruiyot Soi (KEN) at 7:39.25. Kenenisa Bekele
won the next day's men's 5000m with a 13:48.62. Edwin Cheruiyot Soi (KEN) came back to
get another 2nd with a 13:49.45 while Abraham Cherkos (ETH) was 3rd at 13:49.66. In the
women's 3000m, Defar got revenge on Dibaba, 8:34.22 to 8:34.74. Vivian Cheruiyot (KEN)
was 3rd at 8:38.86.
20 Years Ago- Daniel Komen (KEN) ran 12:52.38 to win the men's 5000m at the IAAF/Mobil Grand Prix Final
(ITA). Next came Salah Hissou (MAR) at 12:54.83 and Paul Koech (KEN) at 13:00.67.
Roberta Brunet (ITA) took the measure of Getenesh Wami (ETH) in the women's 5000m, 14:54.54
to 14:55.78. Pauline Konga (KEN) was 3rd (14:56.32), Paula Radcliffe (ENG) was 4th
(14:56.36), and Gabriela Szabo (ROM) was 5th (15:05.21).
30 Years Ago- Said Aouita (MAR) won the 5000m at the IAAF Mobil Grand Prix Final (ITA) over Stefano Mei
(ITA), 13:13.13 to 13:14.29. Sydney Maree (PA/USA) was 3rd at 13:14.62. Olga Bondarenko
(RUS) won the women's 5000m with a 15:16.84. Svetlana Guskova (MDA) and Mary Knisely (USA)
followed with 15:17.95 and 15:22.33 respectively.
40 Years Ago- Bernard Plain and Alan Joslyn went 1-2 for Wales at the 62nd running of the Polytechnic (ENG)
Marathon, 2:15:43 and 2:16:56. Ron Hill (ENG) was 3rd at 2:18:44.
50 Years Ago- Harald Norporth (GER) ran 13:24.8 for 5000m in Cologne GER. Werner Girke (GER) was next
at 13:45.2.
60 Years Ago- John Russell ran 2:26:37.8 to win the Australian marathon title over Keith Ollerenshaw
(2:27:31.2). Les Perry was 3rd at 2:29:08.0.
70 Years Ago- Emil Zatopek (CZE) won the 5000m at the Inter Allied Meeting (GER) with a 14:31.0.
