35th Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend Kicks Off at State Capitol Grounds
St. Paul, Minn. - October 8, 2016 - Keegan Hurley of Dent and Laura Docherty of Minneapolis won the men’s and women’s divisions of today’s TC 10K, presented by SmartyPants Vitamins, the opening event of the 2016 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend, which culminates Sunday with the 18th annual Medtronic TC 10 Mile and the 35th anniversary Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon.
Hurley clocked 33:22 on a course that was approximately three-tenths of a mile longer than 10K due to a course setup error. Michael Hartnett of Richfield was second (34:30), while Matthew Jergenson of Minneapolis (34:44) was third. Docherty ran the course which started and finished at the State Capitol grounds in 39:23. Molly Kayfes of Maple Grove was the women’s runner-up (42:14), with Jenny Wilcox of Stillwater third (42:41).
The TC 10K, part of a full morning of competition for runners of all ages and paces, was followed by the TC 5K, presented by Fredrikson & Byron, where Hamza Ali of Minneapolis won the men’s competition in 14:47 and Melissa Agnew of Burnsville topped the women in 17:24 More than 4,900 runners competed in the TC 10K and TC 5K.
Additionally, more than two thousand runners, mostly kids, competed in the Diana Pierce Family Mile, part of the Medtronic TC Family Events which also included a diaper dash, toddler trot and half mile for its youngest participants.
The day wasn’t just for kids, however; 81 corporate teams raced in the Corporate Team Challenge competitions of the TC 10K and TC 5K.
"With the leaves changing color and a crispness in the air, it was a great day for running," Twin Cities In Motion executive director Virginia Brophy Achman said. "We had great weather and we were pleased to see so many runners show their commitment for fitness and health by running with us, and modeling healthy behavior for kids."
Medtronic TC 10 Mile and Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon
Racing kicks off tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. with the Medtronic TC 10 Mile. Professional runners will compete for the USATF Men’s and Women’s 10 Mile Championships.The 35th anniversary Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon get underway at 7:55 a.m. for wheelers and duos and 8:00 for runners.
More than 30,000 runners of all ages have registered to participate in Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend events.
