10 Years Ago- The BUPA Great South Run (ENG) 10M had the first three men finish within a span of three
seconds with Simon Arusei Koros (KEN) getting the win at 47:17. Jose-Manuel Martinez (ESP)
was next at 47:18 and Jonathan Brown (WAL) was 3rd at 47:19. Joanne Pavey (ENG) won the
women's race by more than a minute over Olivera Jevtic (SER), 52;46 to 53.53. Catherine Mutwa
(KEN) was 3rd at 54:16.
20 Years Ago- Paul Evans (ENG) ran away from the field to win the LaSalle Banks Chicago (IL/USA) Marathon
in 2:08:52. Jerry Lawson (USA) was well back in 2nd at 2:10:04 with Leonid Shvetsov (RUS)
not far behind at 2:10:23. Eamonn Martin (ENG) and Gary Staines (ENG) followed at 2:11:21
and 2:11:25 respectively. Marian Sutton (ENG) was the first woman at 2:30:41 with Kristy
Johnston (USA) in 2nd at 2:31:06. Danuta Bartoszek (ON/CAN) was 3rd at 2:33:01.
30 Years Ago- Paul Donovan (IRL) ran 44:06 to win the Tulsa Run (OK/USA) 15K by four seconds over Marcos-Luis
Barreto (MEX). Carlos Retiz (MEX) came in 3rd at 44:19. In 39th place was Frank Shorter (USA)
at 50:16. Midde Hamrin (SWE) got a convincing win over Francie Larrieu (TX/USA), 50:41 to 51:16.
Susan Wightman (WAL) was 3rd at 51:42.
40 Years Ago- Bill Rodgers (USA) won 7th edition of the New York City (NY/USA) Marathon over Frank Shorter
(USA),2:10:09.6 to 2:13:12. Rodgers would go on to win the next three editions of this race.
Christopher Stewart (ENG) was 3rd at 2:13:21, Ronald Hill (ENG) was 10th (2:19:43), Akio Usami
(JPN) was 12th (2:20:30), Road Race Management newsletter editor Phil Stewart (USA) was 18th
(2:24:30), and Brian Armstrong (CAN) was 24th (2:27:35). Michiko Gorman (USA) ran 2:39:11 to
win the women's race with world cross gold medalist Doris Brown (USA) well back in 2nd with a
2:53:02. Toshiko D'Elia (USA) was 3rd at 3:08:17 and Nina Kuscsik (USA) was 7th (3:20:08).
50 Years Ago- Barry Watson (ENG) bested Colin Kirkham (ENG) to win the Harlow (ENG) Marathon, 2:25:06.2 to
2:27:53. Kenneth Lee (ENG) was 3rd at 2:28:05. A total of 77 finished the race, making it
the 8th largest marathon in the world for 1966.
