10 Years Ago- Alina Ivanova (RUS) was the women's winner at the Dublin (IRL) Marathon, some two minutes
ahead of runner-up Hayley Haining (SCO), 2:29:49 to 2:31:51. Larisa Zyusko (RUS) ran 3rd
with a 2:33:09. The men's race went to Aleksey V Sokolov (RUS) who won by a similar margin
over Aleksandr Kuzin (UKR), 2:11:39 to 2:13:11. Edwin Komen Kipkoech (KEN) was 3rd at 2:13:26.
20 Years Ago- Irina Kazakova and Isabelle Guillot went 1-2 for the French in the women's race at the
Marseille-Cassis (FRA) 20K, clocking 1:11:00 and 1:11:15 respectively. Viktoriya Nenasheva
(RUS) ran 3rd at 1:11:30. The men's race was all Kenyans who swept the first five places.
Laban Chege, Kenneth Cheruiyot, and John Gwako Morimbori made the podium with times of
1:00:54, 1:00:58, and 1:00:59 respectively.
30 Years Ago- Peter Antal (HUN) prevailed at the Budapest (HUN) Marathon with a 2:14:48 to 2:14:55 win over
Miroslaw Bugaj (POL). Zbigniew Kubala (POL) was 3rd at 2:15:01. Agnes Sipka (HUN) had a good
margin over runner-up Kristina Garlipp (GER) in the women's race, 2:29:51 to 2:32:08. Birgit
Schuckmann (GER) was 3rd at 2:37:23.
40 Years Ago- Petr Havel (CZE) won the 20th edition of the Hronov-Nachod (CZE) 8.85K with a 27:13.6.
Miroslav Krsek (CZE) was 3rd at 27:25.0. Helena Ledvinova (CZE) won the women's race over
Jarmila Urbanova (CZE), 32:52.8 to 33:14.2. Sarka Pechkova (CZE) was 3rd at 33:23.6. This
race held its 59th edition this past month (not held in 1990).
50 Years Ago- Ralph Buschmann (CAN) took the measure of Louis Castagnola (USA), 2:24:35.4 to 2:27:48,
in winning the Road Runners Club (NJ/USA) Marathon. Lou Coppens (USA) was 3rd (2:34:25),
Herb Lorenz (USA) was 4th (2:36:22), Tom Osler (USA) was 5th, Fred Best (USA) was 13th
(2:44:43), Ted Corbitt (USA) was 14th (2:46:14), and Ed Winrow (USA) was 15th (2:46:45).
This was the 12th largest marathon in the world for 1966 with 53 finishers. This race is
now known as the Atlantic City Marathon which held its 51st running this past month.
60 Years Ago- Douglas Kyle (CAN) won a 10000m in Vancouver BC/CAN with a 30:15.8.
70 Years Ago- Gerard Cote (PQ/CAN) defeated Johnny A Kelley (MA/USA) 2:47:53.6 to 2:50:28.2 in winning
the 22nd edition of the Yonkers (NY/USA) Marathon. With 29 finishers, this was the 3rd
largest marathon in the world for 1946.
80 Years Ago- Gerard Cote (PQ/CAN) ran 2:40:21 to win a marathon in Montreal (PQ/CAN) over James Bartlett
(ON/CAN), 2:40:21 to 2:47:44. Walter Young (PQ/CAN) was 3rd at 2:50:50.
