10 Years Ago- Christian Belz (SUI) won the VGZ Warande Cross (NED) 10K by two seconds over Gary Murray
(NIR) with Gert-Jan Liefers (NED) another eight seconds back. Kamiel Maase (NED) was
another eight seconds back in 4th. The women's 7.1K race went to Aniko Kalovics (HUN)
who open a huge gap of 33 seconds on Hilda Kibet (KEN). Hanan Farhoun (MAR) was
another 15 seconds back in 3rd.
20 Years Ago- Tami Yada (JPN) outran Rie Matsuoka (JPN) by ten seconds to win the All Japan Women's
(Kobe JPN) 20K, 1:08:17 to 1:08:27. Esther Wanjiru Maina (KEN) was two minutes back
in 3rd (1:10:29).
30 Years Ago- Carl Thackery (ENG) was well clear of Stephen Ksnyon (ENG) in winning the Kodak Southend
Classic (ENG) 10K, 29:10 to 29:21. Colin Reitz (ENG) was 3rd at 29:26. Christine Benning
(ENG) ran 33:55 ahead of Glynis Penny's (ENG) 34:01. Karen Macleod (SCO) was 3rd at
34:11.
40 Years Ago- Frank Shorter (USA) edged John Vitale (USA) to win the International Peace Race (OH/USA)
25K, 1:17:56 to 1:17:57. Tom Fleming (USA) was 3rd (1:18:08) and Carl Hatfield (USA) was
4th (1:18:34). This race hosted international fields for another ten years before the 25K
was dropped, leaving only the 10K, now known as the Youngstown Peace Race.
50 Years Ago- James Joseph Hogan (IRL) ran 1:32:25.4 to break Timothy Johnston's (ENG) 30,000m world
track record by nine seconds, set the previous year on the same Walton-on-Thames (ENG) track.
Graham Taylor (ENG) was 2nd at 1:34:23.6 and Barry Watson (ENG) was 3rd at 1:37:45.2.
