Top multisport athletes will return to Bend's Summit High School to compete for Duathlon Nationals titles in both standard and sprint-distance race options on Saturday, June 17. In addition to national titles in each age group, athletes in both race distances can also punch their ticket for the 2018 ITU Duathlon World Championships, which will be held in Odense, Denmark, as part of the ITU Multisport World Championships Festival.
A two-day event for the first time since 2010, competitors will also have an option to race in the draft-legal Duathlon Worlds qualifier on Sunday, June 18, held as part of Duathlon Nationals for the first time. While the event will not award national titles, top finishers will qualify for the Sprint Duathlon World Championships, which was first held in the draft-legal format in 2016.
Registration is open for all three races scheduled for the Duathlon Nationals weekend at active.com, and additional event details are available at usatriathlon.org/usatdu17.
The 2016 Duathlon Nationals event showcased the talents of nearly 600 athletes from across the country. The City of Bend boasts the nickname of "the outdoor playground of the West" for its endless options of trail running, cycling, hiking and more. With Mt. Bachelor and the Cascade Mountain Range nearby, the cosmopolitan mountain town has become an international mecca for outdoor enthusiasts and people in search of healthy, active vacation destinations.
"Hosting the USA Triathlon Duathlon National Championships is a tremendous opportunity for Bend to showcase the city to a group of skilled athletes and recreation enthusiasts," Visit Bend Executive Director Kevney Dugan said. "We're proud of the success of last year's event, and we're hopeful these athletes and their families continue vacationing here for years to come."
