10 Years Ago- Japanese runners swept the podium positions at the Tokyo Women's (JPN) Marathon, led
by Reiko Tosa at 2:26:15. Akemi Ozaki (2:28:51) and Naoko Takahashi (2:31:22) followed.
Olivera Jevtic (SER) was 4th (2:33:11) and Jennifer Rhines (USA) was 7th (2:35:37).
This race was moved to nearby Yokohama in 2009 and is now known as the Yokohama Women's
Marathon.
20 Years Ago- Nobuko Fujimura (JPN) won the 18th edition of the Tokyo International Women's (JPN) Marathon
over Manuela Machado (POR), 2:28:58 to 2:30:50. Liz McColgan (SCO) was 3rd at 2:30:50 and
Aurica Buia (ROM) was 4th at 2:33:08. Other notables included Malgorzata Sobanska (POL)
in 6th (2:34:36) and Fatuma Roba (ETH) in 8th (2:35:54).
30 Years Ago- Rosa Mota (POR) was well clear of Katrin Dorre (GER)in the 8th edition of the Tokyo
International Women's (JPN) Marathon, clocking 2:27:15 to Dorre's 2:31:54. Ngaire Drake
(NZL) was 3rd at 2:38:08. Allison Roe (NZL) finished 8th at 2:40:45.
40 Years Ago- Henry Rono (KEN) won the NCAA Crosscountry Championships (TX/USA) 10K by ten seconds over
Samson Kimobwa (KEN). Craig Virgin (USA) was another ten seconds back and Herb Lindsay (USA)
was four seconds behind Virgin.
50 Years Ago- David McKenzie (NZL) won the Great Western (NZL) Marathon with a time of 2:20:24.4 which was
the 80th fastest performance in the world that year. The preceding March, McKenzie had run
2:16:59, ranking #21 for 1966.
