10 Years Ago- James Kutto Kipkogei (KEN) ran away from the field to win the Firenze (ITA) Marathon with
a 2:08:41. Francesco Ingargiola (ITA) was more than three minutes back in 2nd with a 2:12:18.
He was followed by three more Kenyans. Vincenza Sicari and Monica Carlin went 1-2 for the
Italians, clocking 2:34:52 and 2:46:31 respectively. Sigrid Valdre (EST) was 3rd at 2:49:19
and Valentina Delion (MDA) was 4th at 2:50:25.
20 Years Ago- Assefa Mezgebu (ETH) led Richard Nerurkar (ENG) by three seconds to win the 38th edition of
the Warande Cross (NED) 10K. Philip Mosima (KEN) was another 31 seconds back in 3rd.
The women's race went to Getenesh Wami (ETH) who was 12 seconds ahead of compatriot Kutre
Dulecha. Simona Staicu (ROM) was another 13 seconds back in 3rd.
30 Years Ago- Tim Hutchings (ENG) defeated Jose-Luis Gonzalez Sanchez (ESP) by seven seconds to win the
men's 6.9K race at the Gateshead Cross Meet (ENG). Jonathan Richards (ENG) was 3rd, another
13 seconds back. Miler Steve Cram (ENG) finished 7th. In the women's 3.45K, Liz McColgan (SCO)
won by 31 seconds over Mary Donohoe (IRL) with Jill Boltz (ENG) just one second behind her.
40 Years Ago- Gerard Tebroke (NED) won the 18th edition of the Warandeloop (NED) cross (9K) by 19 seconds
over Walter VanRenterghem (BEL). Klaas Lok (NED) was another 7 seconds back in 3rd.
50 Years Ago- Michael Ryan (NZL) edged Hidekuni Hiroshima (JPN), 2:14:04.6 to 2:14:05.2 to win the 20th
edition of the Fukuoka (JPN) Marathon. Hirokazu Okabe (JPN) was 3rd at 2:15:09.2. Other
notables included Toru Terasawa (JPN) in 5th (2:15:51.2), Gyula Toth (HUN) in 6th (2:16:36.2),
and Akio Usami (JPN) in 10th (2:17:16).
