Athletics: This Week in Running for Week Ending December 18th

10 Years Ago- Cuthbert Nyasango (ZIM) won the Sevilla-Los Palacios (ESP) Half Marathon over Peter Muriuki (KEN). 1:00:59 to 1:01:23. Michael Keronei (KEN) was 3rd at 1:02:41. Mary Keitany Chepkosgei (KEN) won the women's race by more than two minutes with her 1:09:06. Malika Asahssah (MAR) was runner-up at 1:11:24 and another two minutes back, Nataliya Volguina (RUS) finished 3rd at 1:13:25.

20 Years Ago- Jonathan Brown (WAL) ran away from the field at the European Cross Championships (FRA) 9.68K, winning by 35 seconds over Paulo Guerra (POR). The bronze medal went to Mustapha Essaid (FRA), another seven seconds back. Sara Wedlund (SWE) had a ten second margin over Julia Vaquero (ESP) in the women's 4.55K for the top two podium positions. Bronze medalist Annemari Sandell (FIN) finished another five seconds back.

30 Years Ago- Tim Hutchings (ENG) won the IAC Crosscountry (WAL) 8.5K by 11 seconds over David-William Taylor (ENG) with Carl Thackery (ENG) another 13 seconds back in 3rd. Kirsty Wade (WAL) was three seconds faster than Yvonne Murray (SCO) in winning the women's 5.3K. In third, Sabrina Dornhoefer (USA) was another four seconds back.

40 Years Ago- Jacques Boxberger (FRA) was a clear winner at the Cross du Figaro (FRA) 12K, 12 seconds ahead of Jean-Paul Gomez (FRA). Jean-Luc Paugam (FRA) was another eight seconds back in 3rd with Pierre Levisse (FRA) three seconds back of Paugam in 4th. In the women's race, Joelle deBrouwer (FRA) won by eight seconds over Chantal Navarro (FRA).

50 Years Ago- Amby Burfoot (USA) won the 12th edition of the William Ruthrauff (PA/USA) Marathon with a 2:24:43.4. Paul Hoffman (USA) was next at 2:25:45 and Tom Osler (NJ/USA) was 3rd at 2:40:04. Ted Corbitt (NY/USA) finished 9th (2:51:50). This race is now known as the Philadelphia Marathon and celebrated its 58th running last month.

60 Years Ago- Tadami Minami (JPN) won the Kochi Shinbun (JPN) Marathon in 2:39:43.

70 Years Ago- Doroteo Flores (GUA) ran 1:14:35 to win the Central American and Caribbean Games (COL) Half Marathon.
